Anthony Stewart Head Dead at 72

When the news broke yesterday that Anthony Stewart Head had passed away, my heart immediately sank. I think many Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans felt this loss especially deeply- maybe even more than Nick’s and Michelle’s.

Anthony Stewart Head brought Rupert Giles, Buffy’s Watcher and quintessential father figure, to life with extraordinary skill and nuance. His performance was so layered that even the smallest glance, expression, or gesture could convey an entire spectrum of emotions. Throughout the series, we watched the relationship between Giles and Buffy evolve from that of teacher and student into something much deeper: a genuine father-daughter bond. Their connection became one of the emotional anchors of the show, and it was both beautiful and unforgettable to witness.

For me, Giles kinda felt like all our father figure. Always there to give words of wisdom and advice, he truly felt real to me; maybe that’s way I’ve been overcome with a thick blanket of sadness since I heard the news yesterday morning. I can’t shake this feeling of grief, which feels stupid but also special- it’s a testament to Anthony Stewart Head’s acting ability that I connected so deeply with his character.

My heart hurts so bad for his daughters, who have now lost both parents within 6 months of each other. I know the feeling of losing a parent, but to lose both so quickly is absolutely heartwrenching.

I have added a couple of new Giles-centric pieces on the Art page today. It doesn’t change the fact that Tony Head is gone, but it helps me cope with my sadness just a little bit.
